When I have been away from my machine for awhile, sometimes I forget whether I have left a ballpoint needle or a regular needle installed. My solution is to mark the ballpoint needles with a little bit of red nail polish. I am then able to tell at a glance which kind type of needle is currently installed (it’s difficult to see those tiny etched numbers).

When I change needles, I write the size and type of needle on my machine with a sharpie. An alcohol swab or some rubbing alcohol will take the sharpie right off, and I never have to guess about the size or type.
What tiny etched numbers? Thanks for the tip.
Liked the comment. I have trouble with different sized needles too so was thinking different coloured polish for different sized needles would work too. Now i know it would work.
thats a good one
Sounds good but where are you putting the polish? Just high enough that it doesn’t go in the fabric or catch the thread? thanks for the idea.
You might want to look at an item that I’ve owned for a long time. It’s an optical visor. It even has a light that you can add to it.I also bought the “Optiloupe” accessory(it’s an additional monoacule).I now have two of them and thy’re great for close up work.Go to http://www.doneganoptical.com
Super duper tip. Thanks bunches!
I LOVE this idea. I use nail polish to mark all sorts of things, but had not thought to use it on my ballpoint needels. Thank you, Cynthia, for the great idea!
You might want to use a color other than red because embroidery needles have a red mark on them. Pat
I was so impressed with this idea that I immediately got all my embroidery needles and placed nail varnish on the top of them, thank you
I usually leave a poiece of the material that I’ve been using under the presser foot
I have one of those little pin cushions divided into partitions with green cord (extra can be added)
Write the number of the needles on a ‘slice’ and put your used needle into it.
You don’t then put a part used needle back into your ‘unused pack’ again. You then know which needles to ‘re-use’
