I’m one of those people who doesn’t want to wait for things via the US mail, but it looked like I may have to do just that because my bobbins were becoming a tangled mess and I saw items online that would take care of my problem.
I did not give in! I realized I had something close to home I could use. I now use my granddaughter’s small pony tail holders. They work great! Sometimes I have to wind it twice around the bobbin depending on how much thread is left.
I can easily replace them because they are not expensive! I can go to our local Dollar Store and get a package of 25 for a dollar.
Just a dollar – no postage or shipping charges!

Your a thinker! Wish I’d thought of that!
I to use the small pony tail rings…I buy mine at Dollar Tree they have 100 in the packs…I use them for bobbins as well as to place around all my threads…be it regular thread spools + my emboridery threads.
i use them too. they work great and got mean at the dollar store. thanks
I also for a short time used small pony tail holders to hold thread ends. My cat got ahold of one plus a long piece of thread – end result the thread wrapped around her tounge and the other end around the holder. The end result was $1000 surgery, so the pony tail holders went into the trash. So be careful if you have any small pets.
Thank You!!!!! I like ordering matching thread and bibbons. The last order the bibbons were a
mess. Will use your idea next time!!!!!!
I use the same thing but here they are 100 in a pack. The hardest thing about them is that they are colored so it is hard to see the color of your bobbin thread. But my bobbins are clear plastic so I can just look on the sides to find out.
What a great idea, I just purchased netting to make spool thread holders and was trying to come up with something for the bobbins that I prewound that had all the ends hanging out in my bobbins box. Temporarily I stuck scotch tape on the side of the bobbin to hold the thread. Thanks for the tip!! Great. Bobby
Good tip, I use a ponytail holder around a tape measure I have that is 120 inches. They are a lot cheaper than the plastic things you can purchase to keep thread from coming off the bobbins.
I have found the very best holder for my bobbins.
I bought it in Spotlight in Adelaide. It was very cheap – can’t remember just what, but I have 4 of them. Two by my sewing machine and two by my embroidery machine. each holds 25 bobbins, made of a soft plastic, is shaped like a doughnut with a channel around the outside edge, and the bobbins sit sideways in there so each colour can be seen at a glance. Easy to put in and easy to take out no tangling or moving
I too use small pony tail holders for my bobbins
also use the larger ones with small zip lock plastic bags purchased at the local Dollar Store
to cover my embroidery thread this not only keeps them clean but tidy.
I also do the same thing with pony tail holders for my bobbin threads. And the great thing about buying a large package is the variety of colors that you get. That way, I can color code my bobbin thread with the pony tail holder thread and see at a glance what color bobbins I have in my bobbin box. I learned this from one of our local stores when our ASG group has a field trip.
Another holder for obbins is a small circle of plastic tubing cut and placed around bobbin. Cut tubing narrow enough to fit between sids of bobbin and the cut so you caaaaaaan open it to slide it around bobbin. Tubing can be gotten at hardware stores or places that sell fish tank supplies.
I also use them for my thread. the middle size ones. they hold the thread so it doesnt unravel.. i have used them for years. works great..
The soft rubber bobbin holders are available at Viking Sewing Galleries inside JoAnn’s stores throughout the U.S.
I also use these on spools of thread that have a cardboard tube in the centre. Hoop over the top of the tube then twist into a figure of eight and hoop over the bottom of the tube. Holds the loose end tidily in place.
I use the soft blue rubber bobbin holders called “Bobbin Savers”. I have found them at several embroidery stores. They are not very expensive and you can store many bobbins on them. I have one for each of my machines since the bobbins are differant on each one.
The things that hold your toes for a pedicure also make great bobbin holders… also very inexpensive at the dollar stores.
I use fish tank tube cut it in 1/4 inche peices and cut it open clip it over the bobbin works great no matter how small of a amount there is left on the bobbin
I use thread socks (thread nets) on my thread spools and there is enough room to slide the bobbin into the net with the spool. That way, I always have my thread and bobbin together.
