Thank you for a cute and very practical project. I stitched it out today. I stitched one block at a time, stopping to read directions and look at the pictures. I skipped the two embroidery blocks because I wanted to finish quickly. I cut all three pieces 6X9, as I always need more area for adhesive. This case will hold a whole package of tissue. I am thinking of adding a length of ribbon with a key ring attached.

Thank you for the great instructions. I just ordered lavender to make some sachets and I love this idea. I have some heirloom designs that will work great or I could just personalize with a name, etc. Thank you again, Jackie

Jane, there is an adapter you can buy at any electronics store that has a slot for the SD card on one end, and a USB plug on the other end. Simply stick it into a USB drive on your computer and save away.

Thnaks everyone for the nice comments.
To put the designs on the sleeves I took the sleeve seam apart and cut downt he side to make a seam as well - the light houses are on the back as well. By cutting the side open I was able to pockets in.
The purple one is not a zipper jacket, it has hidden snaps. Both of these sweatshirts had very big bottom bindings so I took them off and cut off the excess and used that for the pockets. To make the pockets, I cut the shirt where I wanted the pockets, I sewed fabric to the outside of the cut, and used the left over binding I cut off the bottom to put on the inside cut - this made up for the seam allowance so you do nto see the pocket fabric as it does not match the sweatshirt fabric. On the purple one, I then just stitched across teh top and caught the rest of the pocket edges either in the bottom binding or the center opening to close it up. I hope this is understandable.
Thanks!

Love these. I'm thinking, why couldn't I spray my favorite - used ever day- perfume on those little sample cards from the cosmetic counter and use that instead of the potpourri. Then I wouldn't smell like apples and cinnamon to clash with my Beautiful. There is so very much talent and creativity on this site for those of us who are not up to challenge.

Rob, I made your closet dividers for my granddaughter to give at a baby shower. They were a hit. When asked where she got them, she said her Granny made them, we don't shop at Target! (Target was the registry for baby gifts) This is such a unique gift idea, I am already working on another set, I never know when I might need a baby gift.

I keep my designs alphabetized by category, for example,
alphabets and fonts
animals
baby nursery
birds
flowers and plants
Fish/marine life
Nautical
Insects, etc. (make up your own)
Then I only label discs by alphabetical letter. You will always know in which disc to find the designs you need. I change all number name to descriptive names that I can recognize, like Roses, or whales, sailboat, whatever the case might be. You load in the pertinent disc and menu down until you find your design. It has become very easy. You can also have them in the same way in your computer but make sure they are backed up regularly by a system that preserves them in case of virus.

I purchased tee pee pouch designs, I would like a plain set so I can put designs for little boys. Do you have one ?
[editor's note: Barbara - did you get the 4x4 or the 5x7 bags? The 4x4 has some "less than feminine designs" http://www.designsbysick.com/details/teepeebag

These look really neat! But I am confused about when you sew the pieces together - what keeps the needle from breaking as you stitch over the excess zipper area?

I made one of these shirts but without a zipper. I had some animal print (Stretchy) and I made a shell to go under the T Shirt. The sleeves were too long for me so I made 2 pockets and trimmed the top of the pockets with the animal print. I used a black (Bought) shirt. It really makes a nice outfit. I have had many comments.
The directions to your shirt are very good and easy to understand.

Good idea. I use an old headache pill bottle (lg size) with a childproof cap that I poked a hole in the top of for all my used needles. No more dropped needles on the floor or falling out of the garbage bag when it gets changed.

Someone make nice pouches for a yardsale (not near as fancy as this) to make the jewlery look nicer for a better sale. I thought it made the jewelery look better than just laying it on the table. But I want to do this for valentines for my girls. So much better than just the box. It is like something worthy of a PRINCESS, which I always want them to know they are.

Drill a small hole in the top. Drop bad/bent straight pins and used needles in the container. When you're ready, tape over the hole, taping the top down, and throw in the trash. This works well with prescription bottles, too. Keeps those pins and needles from poking out of the garbage bags and causing injury.

These shirts are beautiful and I'm especially fond of the lighthouses. And I agree that both of the openings are very well constructed. I plan on using the lighthouses for a quilt for my brother-in-law. Great choices. Thanks for sharing.

...I keep one of those in my car to hold various small things (and another one for gum!...keep refilling it! LOL). I have paper clips, small bulldog clips, pins, etc...all the things I seem to collect that would get lost in the car otherwise.

Now why didn't I think of that ! I have looked and looked at the container wondering what good use it could be used for. Now I will save and use for all those things that build up beside the sewing machines. Thanks so much

Helen, I like your placement of the designs on the purple shirt. What a great idea, to use corner designs on areas other than corners!
The lighthouses look great on the blue shirt. Was it difficult to stitch on the sleeves?
And the openings on both shirts look very neat and projessional, too!

This is a great project but I cannot find linen tea toweling anywhere. I can find lots of cotton tea toweling. If I want to go with linen I will have to buy regular yardage and hem all four sides.

I have 10 sewing machines...upholstery, embroidery, sergers, and regular machines and my machine repirman said sewing over pins is the fastest way to throw a sewing machine out of timing. Usually about a $100 repair!

Good advice on the pins. Another time to beware of flying or broken needles is during free motion quilting. If you pull the fabric too quickly you can break a needle. I recommend safety goggles for a new free motion quilter.

I know this from experience! As long as we're discussing safety - it's not good to sew over fingers either - ouch this hurt. On a PBS show - Sewing with Nancy - a guest was using the eraser end of a pencil to hold &/or guide her fabric under the needle. At last something that really works well and keeps our precious fingers away from that needle!

I agree - I was taught to put my pins in line with my needle - I pull them out as I go. Was taught never to put them perpendicular to the needle so that it wouldn't hurt anything if you sewed over them. You just proved it to me again why it doesn't matter how you pin things, just don't sew over the pins! And my mother taught me years and years ago to pin this way. If it was good enough for her - well - it was easier to do it her way then try to tell her what the "home ec" teacher said (over 50 years ago!)

Sharon G- All of the fabric is cotton or cotton blends. I used what I had on hand. The yellow was actually a scarf I had never worn, but I did not have any bright yellow fabric in my stash. So goodbye scarf! I used a medium weight tear away stabilizer.
Thanks everyone for the comments- the baby is due February 9. Can't wait!

I made one of these years ago using some thermal lined curtain fabric after seeing a similar design for folk art paint brushes. Also I made one for crotchet hooks too .Its a great way to keep all the needles tog & tidy .

Very clever! I'm using baggies, which the needles can puncture quite easily. I think I'll adapt this to hold my multiple sets of DP needles.

This looks like a great idea. I will have to make mine larger, since I have both my mother's (deceased) and my collections of both knitting and crotchet needles. I have also started needle-turn applique (uses several threads, a few small sewing needles, small scissors,etc.). Do you have any ideas for a case containing these ?

Jut like you, Cooky, I found out this past July that I was going to be a Great Aunt but for me little Taylor Leigh was going to be the first in our family. I set out right away making tons of burp cloths, bibs, block quilts (they were nice and easy). It sure is fun being a Great Aunt!!!

That's just adorable. Love your choice of fabrics. 44x56 is a great size for a baby quilt and he/she can use the quilt for some time. I always like them a little larger so they get more use out them. You did a wonderful job on this and it'll be the little ones favorite quilt. I'm sure of it.

Hi, I live in South Africa, please tell what a "foamie" is, this sounds like a fantastic tip which I would love to make use of.

[editor's note: Foamies are small pieces of foam rubber - usually cut into shapes, and they have adhesive on the back. You can see some here:

Can you provide instructions on how these designs were put together -- did you embroider the front design then put another piece of felt behind prior to edging -- is that how it is digitized?

I have bad eye sight, and the smaller versions you are usng now is hard for me to de-cipher. Please go back to the larger print.
[Editor's note: We have not changed the font size - but you can adjust yours by clicking on VIEW on the toolbar at the top of your screen and then ZOOM and then ZOOM IN. Hope this helps!]

Mylar can be bought at the Nancy Zieman website, she has it in 12 colors and the price is okay. 5 sheets for 3.49 or all 12 colors/5 sheets each for around 37.00. I can't wait to try it.

I've used this technique many times. It is especially great for designs that are not true fsl as it gives the design a permanent backing. I often use this method for making appliques to sew onto garments. It is much easier for placement than embroidering directly on the item. If I think the tulle might show, I use a color that matches the garment I'm making the design for.

I use a small piece of painters tape stuck to my machine's front with needle size or any other reminder I need. It removes easily and leaves no residue.

I only use the 'fabric' type of wash away stabilizer for FSL designs, rather than the plastic looking type. It works much better and I don't think it is as succeptible to humidity.

Since the tulle is so inexpensive, it never hurts to have a little of it around. Plenty of uses fir it

I use this method all the time when making lace, after I have washed out the WSS and the lace has dried I burn around the edge with a small burning iron and the edges are always very tidy, you can only use Rayon embroidery threads when using the iron as Poly will burn. Hope this will help.Pat.

To avoid pokies from tulle I use something similar to a soldering iron to melt around the edges. You can't use polyester thread as that will also melt. It works with rayon thread or cotton or other natural fiber. I'm also in GA and most of the time I prefer the non-woven clothlike WSS. It isn't affected by the humidity and much sturdier for stitching lace.

I learned early on not to use the Solvy-type film WSS for my FSL designs. Since switching to the Vilene-type WSS, I have never had a problem with the WSS. I only use the film as a topper for designs embroidered on towels and fleece. Even on some of those things, I use tulle for better holding power on the pile. HTH someone.

Thank you! I have wanted tips for FSL, too. I have had good stitch out with the fiber/cloth looking wss and even with that I had to learn to sometimes use two layers. I will certainly try the netting and I have a stash of tulle waiting for something. Thank you for all the sharing of tips. There is so much to learn!

I've used organza and WSS when making lacy designs (not FSL) for dollhouse miniatures and I get "pokies" also. The way I handle them is to VERY CAREFULLY use a woodburning tool. I don't actually touch the fabric because the tip is very hot and will burn right through the fabric and thread. I just put the tip of the tool very close to the edge and the pokies melt away leaving the nice clean edge of the design.

I agree, please have folks send the recipes along! How about a fundraising recipe offering. You can do it as a download and charge a nominal fee ($5) and donate it to charity in the true spirit of the season. I think that would be a wonderful extension of so many stories I have read here today. Imagine collecting recipes over the next 6 months and offering this up for sale. It could end up being a real nice donation to some folks in need. Thank you everyone for sharing!

What a wonderful array of family traditions! I thoroughly enjoyed reading them all. Reading Carrot Crumbs in the Bedroom reminds me of how we managed the "Santa question" for our boys - our explanations were the same. I also gave my grandchildren the same explanation when they were tiny.
Happy New Year, everyone, and Happy Stitching too.

Instead of bridal tulle you could use silk organza. Then after fussy cutting, you can melt the porkies using a hot stencil cutter or a soldering iron.

maria, when you have the pokie's...try using a cigarette lighter and cautiously going around and over the edges.
i do this all the time to get loose ends that did not trim neatly. just a light touch of the flame will do wonders.

Would you please share the brand name and density of the WSS that you used? When you said, "Single Layer WSS 4x on bottom", did you mean that you used 4 layers on the bottom?

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing that is an awesome idea. I have a lot of WSS that is too small for hooping alone but is too big to throw away. Thanks again.

Thinking further out of the box, you may want to try the wss that is woven like a fabric. I prefer it over the plastic. Although it is more expensive, for that special project you will have a much cleaner edge and may be cheaper in the long run.

This was so much fun to read. I too would love to get the recipe for guinness fruit cake and the gingerbread house pdf. My own children live a thousand miles away and must start their own traditions. I will send some of these heartfelt ideas. Happy New Year!!

Another idea is to use organza and cut it with a hot stencil cutter. Jenny Haskins sells one, but you can get them much cheaper by going into the stencil department in a hobby store. They are electric and heat up like a soldering iron, but have a much finer tip. I believe that they will go through tulle "like butta" as well.

I would like the PDF file for the "Gingerbread House tradition". That sounds like so much fun! Esp since you can incorporate so many others into it. It would be fun to donate one to different orphanges or nursing homes. Those who are less fortunate love a treat such as this.
I loved all the traditions. Great job.
Happy New Year and great stitching this year.

I've used this method before, but when you want a 'clean' edge on lace, the tulle will leave a pokie which is not pretty (in my opinion)....so I only used this method when the design itself isn't too stable (and there are many like that), then I chance using bridal tulle for the extra body.

Sometimes we really make the hubbies happy with our embroidery! I now have a (used) 6 needle and put a baby moniter next to it and have the other part of the moniter by my side so I can cook, clean, watch TV and movies with the husband and get my embroidery done too! I made him a card money bag with some card embroidery on it so he could keep his card money separate. Now all his card buddies have card money bags too and guess who made them? His wonderful wife of course!

really love your idea. I will have to definatly use this idea. I am a self taught quilter of about 15 years now I think. Have loss count. Binding is not my favorite thing to do but I think now it will be. I think I might pass this tip along to some of my other quilt groups I belong to online. With your info attached to it so you get credit of course.
Make a great christmas stocking stuffer for some quilty friends and family. Off to make some, for me and my mom's quilt group.
