How to Embroider With Mylar

by Heidi Kilgore
Since Mylar is the newest adventure in appliqué embroidery, I wanted to give some simple instructions:l

I.  Hoop your fabric and stabilizer .

2.  After putting the hoop on the machine, the first round of my design is the placement stitch showing  where the Mylar is going to be place.

3. Round 2,  lay your Mylar on the top of the placement stitch and sew.

4.  Trim your Mylar back to the placement stitch.

5. Sew the rest of the design over the Mylar, and you will have a lovely lacy design with Mylar underneath that will give it extra sparkle and shine through out.

Enjoy!

thank you so much for the lesson on mylar – I have never used it and it is only recently I even heard about it = good thing I have lots of friends on site that help me out when I have to learn ANOTHER NEW technique – I do have those senior moments lol

  4. BJ says:

I stitched out #7 in 5×7 last night. I used the holographic film that I found at Dollar Tree. Pictures do not do these justice. I’m sending a pic of mine to my photo album here on DBS.

I like how this looks. Can you wash the garment when you use the mylar, or is it just for show. If so how many washings can this stand. All of my garments are washed only, do not like dry cleaning. Just want to know what to expect.

    where can I buy mylar

  10. georgia says:

Hi — love this idea. Where does one get mylar? Cut from balloons, banners or is it sold in sheets or rolls for embroidery purposes? Thanks!

  11. Suzanne M says:

I love sewing with mylar, the sparkle is so pretty. I get my mylar from anywhere that sells balloons and ask for their mistakes.

  12. liz says:

What is Mylar? do you use mylar balloons or is it some type of fabric

  13. Gerry B says:

The mylar balloons just do NOT work well. I got rolls of the opal look mylar they wrap gift baskets in & it works great. You can also buy it online, but I’ve forgotten the site! The colored mylar (as in the balloons) will lose their color. It can be washed in the washing machine as I tried it. I did NOT put it in the dryer, although some have said they have.

  14. Pat M. says:

I echo Jeans Mant question where do you purchase the Mylar. I have looked every place I can think of with no luck. I have seen the Mylar Butterflies and they are so pretty. thank you again . Double thank you for sharing free designs with us.

  15. Nancy says:

I bought mylar from Heirlooms by Sharon.

  16. Vilma Anderson says:

I would love to try and do applique but I have no idea when I get the designs where are the parts that need to be made and glued/sewed. Could someone go through the trouble and tell me how to go about it? Thanks. Vilma in Alaska

  17. Peggy Plumley says:

I am very new at machine embroidery. Would you please tell me what type of stabilizer you would use for this type of project?

You can order mylar from this web site

  19. diane gallaher says:

Mylar can be bought at the Nancy Zieman website, she has it in 12 colors and the price is okay. 5 sheets for 3.49 or all 12 colors/5 sheets each for around 37.00. I can’t wait to try it.
