Just Hangin’ Around

By Chris

You can make an embroidered image into a two-sided rearview mirror hanger by making the design and then making a mirror image of the same design and sewing it together with a string at the top. I did this with a skull for a friend and it came out great! Makes a great gift.

Couldn’t this also be done by using the same color bobbin thread as top thread? Might save alittle time….

To Betty June- I make two of them for the stiffness and to hide the string, it looks and hangs better that way. Thanks for the comment.

Great idea! I have an angel to make for a friend for a keychain. This would be wonderful! Thanks for the tip!

@Betty June: Using the same thread in the bobbin would save time if you have only one or two colour changes in the design. For lots of colour changes, disengaging the hoop to change the bobbin in addition to the spool would be even more time-consuming. It could be worth it to change bobbin colours if you’ve got more than one of the designs going in the hoop, however, and you’ve reordered the steps. I like the idea of doing this on organza, too, with the same colour in the bobbin as in the needle, for a translucent dangler. Wire couched in the perimeter of the medallion or “badge” would help it keep its shape. (I’d save that part for the sewing machine and your overcasting foot – I do it that way all the time.) You’d just have to be meticulous about cutting your jump stitches on both sides of the stitch-out.

Really cute idea, Chris! Thanks for the inspiration.
