Out of this World Stash Help

by Kristy Brown

When I found that my ‘stash’ was taking over too much of my sewing room I discovered Space Bags!
I put all the calico in one Space Bag and vacuumed out the air and laid it neatly on a shelf, then all the corduroy, then the gingham, etc.
Now there is so much more room for MORE STASH!  If you are an ‘organizer’ like I am, you may want to put things away by color instead of fabric type, whatever works for you.
You can see through the bags so you can search for the piece of fabric you want, open that bag and take it out, then vacuum the air back out and put it away again.
This also works well for polyester fiberfill and yarn.
If you buy the kind of Space Bags that you can ‘roll’ the air out of instead of using the vacuum, you can use them when transporting fabric or knitted or crocheted items to and from Craft Fairs (takes up less room in the vehicle).

Just a word of warning about using those space bags. Any folds or creases can permanently become a part of your fabric, making it unuseable. I wouldn’t take the chance for long term storage.

That sounds fine for saving space, but, , , , what does the item look like when you remove it from a squished bag. Isn’t it a flattened, mangled, wrinkled mess? I dont own any of these bags so am asking for informtion. It just seems that the items would need a lot of ironing and fluffing.

This sounds like a fantastic idea! I am in the process of organizing my sewing supplies and plan to try this!!!

Wow. What a great idea. I seem to “inherit” everyone’s stash when they no longer want it..and I don’t have the heart to throw it out either!! Tks! You may have saved my marriage. Just kidding, he’s a sweetie.

Great idea and one I never thought of… I have those large plastic containers stacked in my garage and it’s a royal pain trying to find one fabric that I know is in one of the many containers… Thanks.

I have never had good luck with any of those Space bags. They all have lost their vacuum in a very short time. For my yarn, I have started using those Shoes Unders (As seen on TV) That way I can see all my yarn in each one.

What a great idea! I have 32 boxes of fabric stashed in my attic. I’m sure I could reduce that by 1/2 using space bags. My husband will be so happy.

Sounds great! I have soooo much fabric I’m putting into my new sewing room. How does the fabric look when it comes out of the shrinked bags? No permanent wrinkles? I’ll have to look at prices.

What a fantastic idea! Why didn’t someone tell me this sooner? I’ve been selling my fabrics at yard sales because I’m running out of room for the new stuff. No more! I’m going shopping for space bags!! WHOOHOO!

  12. Donna says:

I saw some similar bags at the dollar store, I wonder if they would work. Guess I’ll have to make a trip to get one and try it out.

I have been wondering about those vaccuum seal bags for food has anyone tried to seal their fabric stash into one of those. I presently have one collection in a vaccuum seal bag which is working out for me and storage.
