Project of the Week - Butterfly Corner Bookmarks
     Released July 25, 2010

created by Bonnie

Once again Bonnie has come up with a clever way to create  a project which requires very little fabric, are quick-to-stitch, and all fit the 4 x 4 hoop!

These delightful bookmarks are begging to be made for stocking-stuffers, the upcoming school year or perhaps just to be tucked into an envelope and sent to the avid reader in your life!  I can see them being included when a book has been given as a gift as well!

I have a feeling this is going to be one of those projects where - you can’t make just one! (searching through my stash now finding small 6 x 6 scraps!  Oh, this is going to be SO much fun!)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Please read all instructions before starting

SUPPLIES:
Tear-away or Wash-away Stabilizer
Thread of your choice
Fabric pieces

Note:  CC – Stands for Color Change

Prepare fabric pieces as follows:

Cut 3 6×6 blocks for each bookmark.
You can mix and match your fabrics or have them all one pattern or color. It’s up to you.

DIRECTIONS FOR TOP OF BOOKMARKS
Note: All Bookmark tops have the word “top”after the number. All bottoms have a the word “bottom” after the number.

TOP Bookmark
STEP 1  - Take one of the blocks and fold in half diagonally making a triangle and press a nice crisp fold making sure the wrong side of the fabric is to the inside.
bbm1

STEP 2 - Hoop your stabilizer and place hoop on machine.
Stitch out first CC.
This is a placement mark for your triangle. See Below:

bbm2

STEP 3 - Place your triangle over the placement stitching and line it up so that the fold is along the center diagonal line. See Below:

bbm3

STEP 4 - Stitch next CC. This will tack the piece in place.
Follow the CC chart to finish the design. When finished remove from hoop and remove all the stabilizer from the back.
Trim around leaving about ½” of fabric, also cut across the corner as close to the stitching line as possible with out cutting the thread.

bbm4

BOTTOM Bookmark

STEP 1 - Hoop your stabilizer and place hoop on machine.
Stitch out first CC.
This is a placement mark for your square. See Below:

bbm5

STEP 2  - Next place your square over the placement stitching making sure the line is covered by the fabric all around.
Stitch next CC this tack down the fabric and then continue with the stitching the design.

bbm6

bbm7

STEP 3 - After stitching design place your back fabric under hoop right side facing down.
Stitch next CC — this will tack back in place.

bbm8

STEP 4 - Now place your triangle over top. Set the edge back away from the corner a little bit as pictured below where the scissor point is pointing and then stitch the tack down stitch.
By cutting the top corner away you can use this to help line up triangle over top.

bbm9

STEP 5 - After tacking the top in place remove hoop and trim fabric from top and bottom.

bbm10

STEP 6 - Place hoop back on machine and finish with the satin stitch.
Remove Bookmark from hoop and you”re finished.

  8. MYLAR ANSWER — Most likely they can, you just have to determine where to stop it and trim the Mylar. You can use the Mylar with most any design, you just need to experiment with it, do a test stitch of what you want to use it with first before you put it on the actual item you want it on.

  10. Great designs for a great idea! Sandra - the third piece of material is floated under the design and tacked down before the top triangle is put on (see step 3). I almost missed that one too!! The mylar is a fabulous idea also. Thanks for including.

  12. Sandra,

    1st piece is the triangle
2nd piece is the one at step two
3rd piece of fabric is used at step 3. Slide the backing fabric under the hoop right side down.

    hope that helps!

  13. Sandra, The 3rd square is the back of the design. Hope this helps.

    Comment by Teresa — July 25, 2010 @ 12:45 pm

  14. Sandra, perhaps the 3rd squares is placed wrong side to the underside of the stabilizer after the bottom design is stitched to provide a backing for the bookmark? I guess we just have to stitch it out & see.

  18. Fabulous! I would love to make this with bees!!

    Comment by Margaret — July 25, 2010 @ 9:38 pm

  19. Hi Sandra - two squares are used as the front and back of the bookmark bottom (see step 3)with the third being used as the corner triangle.

Bonnie thanx for sharing this great idea, they will make fantastic Secret Santa gifts and stocking stuffers with the receivers Initial embroidered on them. I think I will make one change though - put the second embroidery on the back of the bookmark bottom so it isn’t hidden by the page when the bookmark is in use. Thanx again. Cheerz

  21. I have not stitched these out yet but am wondering if one of these butterflies is cutwork. The one sample almost looks like it…

[translation: superb idea! I do not include/understand the 3°? one makes slip the triangles UNDER the framework? ??? I see badly with flowered fabric. thank you for the indications amitiés]

    Comment by Elizabeth — July 26, 2010 @ 11:13 pm

  23. None of the Butterflies are cut work, sorry.

    Comment by Bonnie T.(digitizer) — July 29, 2010 @ 9:51 am

  24. Step 3. How do I get the square to stay in place when I place it under the hoop. What keeps it from moving and gathering?
    Thanks

    Comment by Patricia — July 30, 2010 @ 1:22 pm

  25. As long as your fabric is smooth it should not gather. If your machine does not cut the bobbin thread you will have to cut then slide the fabric under the hoop.
