Smooth Things Over
     Released June 19, 2009

by Pat Cady
Sometimes spools of thread have a rough edge that can catch the thread.  My solution is to keep a coarse emery board near my machine and file the rough edge until it’s smooth enough to no longer present a problem.

  1. I had to do just that today while sewing!

  3. I just had a “DUH” moment. I have struggled with rough edge spools many times. I had never thought of filing them down. Thank you.

  4. Great tip, and such a simple solution to the problem, too!

  5. Absolutely great idea. How many times has this happened to me, and totally made a good job less than perfect. Thanks

  6. I’ve had the same problem but now I have a suggestion as to how to get rid of the problem of the thread catching. Thanks for the suggestion.

  9. I also agree - what a great idea, Pat! However, I’ll call it an ‘aha’ moment. Thank you so much for sharing.

  12. This works great. I do the same thing all the time. I thought of it one day because I always have an emery board in my desk which is right next to my machine, and tried it one day when the thread I was using kept catching my thread. Thanks for dharing it with everyone.
