Halloween is approaching, and stars and magic wands are all over the stores. If you look up the word “magic” in a dictionary, you will find several meanings, as both noun and adjective.
Magic: (noun): an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source; something that seems to cast a spell; any extraordinary or mystical influence, charm, power, etc.; the art of producing illusions by sleight of hand (adjective): giving a feeling of enchantment.
So, by those definitions, an activity which can make one lose track of time, create items which are charming, or which create an illusion, is magic. I suggest, therefore, that all of us who sew and embroidery are magicians.
For many of us, needlecrafts (of whatever flavor) are a wondrous hobby, casting a spell over our imaginations and our creativity, where we can lose ourselves for hours, whether we are wandering through aisles of fabric, dreaming over pattern catalogs, or listening to the whirring noise of our sewing machines.
Charming? Just think of delicate little christening dresses, with white lace and smocking. Or a young girl’s holiday dress, of rich dark velvet and sparkling trims.
Illusion? That’s easy. Hide a small stain on a blouse with a bright embroidered patch. Make a garment designed to draw the eye away from a figure flaw. Or make a cover to fit a storage shelf, hiding from view the clutter it contains.
Yes, Sewing is magic. It inspires, transforms, and challenges me. I hope it does the same for you. And on our magic (World Wide) Web, we can share our magic together.
(be sure to watch for an upcoming article by SewMagical when she transforms an ordinary sweat shirt into a zippered cardigan!)

I totally agree….our sewing and embroidery world is a magical place for grown-ups and for children…full of wonder and delight.
Amen, Sister!
Looking forward to it. LOL!!!
What a wonderful reminder that we are creative and magical. Thanks so much for being inspirational.
I love this, thank you for your thoughtful descriptions of the special craft we all share. Those of us who are amateurs and have made items with loving flaws and those of you who are very experienced and create professional quality items all share the same special amazement and peace when we work. Thank you for giving us a new description of our craft.
Glad you all like it! Your comments encourage and inspire me!
