Which Way to Hoop?

by Karen

When choosing fabric to embroider be sure to cut the fabric so the lengthwise grain runs horizontal in the hoop.   This can really reduce the puckering that can occur.  I make embroidered greeting cards using quilting cottons and since I discovered this it has made a huge difference in the look of the cards.

Thank you for this tip. I did not know this.

This is good, but how can I tell the lengthwise grain when it’s a fat quarter, or another piece of fabric? Thank you.

If you can see a selvage edge, that is the lengthwise grain. Otherwise, you can usually tell the lengthwise grain by which direction has the least amount of stretch. All fabric will have at least a tiny bit of stretch or “give” when pulled. The lengthwise grain (warp) is the least stretchy/most stable, followed by the width grain (waft), and the greatest amount of stretch is in the bias. Hope that helps in identifying.
