    Default Overwhelmed Newbie questions

Hi, I've been trying to read through all the post about software and digitizing and am totally overwhelmed. Would love a little help and recommendations.
I have the Brother pe 770, very nice machine, but no software or anything. I do have and work with vector programs. There is so much info and different embroidery software programs !
Looking for a cheap or free (to start with), open source program for designs? Fonts? Light digitizing. simple designs?
Any help would be great Thank you

Cjrowles I can understand how you feel as we all go through this stage when we first start with machine embroidery! I will share what I use and like the most!
For basic viewing, editing and resizing of designs there are 2 free softwares I use the most, myeditor and wilcom truesizer.

    https://m.wilcom.com/en-us/products/...rproducts.aspx

    http://www.wingsxp.com/index.php/my_editor/

These are very easy to use and serves all the purposes for a non digitizer.
If you wish to learn and try digitizing I would recommend embird which is the most popular of all the embroidery digitizing softwares!
It does have a learning curve but is a very efficient software and not too expensive. The good thing is you can buy the plug ins gradually as and when needed. Initially you need only the basic embird and studio plugin for digitizing. Iconizer is a handy plug in too which displays all your embroidery designs as thumbnails which are saved in your computer.
You can find more info here...

Hope this will help you decide.

cjrowles, welcome to the world of machine embroidery! I also use Wilcom for resizing, centering of designs and changing formats. I use Edit Express lite for viewing, changing colors and printing http://amazingdesigns.com/edit-express-lite. And I use Sophie Sew for digitizing. This one is free and very easy to use. It does not contain fonts however. There are a lot of youtube videos to help learn it. http://sophiesew.com/SS2/index.php I have tried others but have not been happy with the stitch outs and some are just very hard to learn. ( Stitch ERA still comes up as free, I think they still charge a monthly fee to use it - not much - but I was not happy with the stitch outs, the outlines do not stitch around the design very well)

There are several programs that give 30 day trials before purchasing to see if you like them before buying. I have not tried any of them.

I am very new to machine embroidery, and I can fully understand what you are going through. I looked at the specifications of several programs, and decided to try Sew Art ( http://www.sandscomputing.com/id69.html ). The price was $75.00 (Seventy-Five dollars) and I am very happy with the results. I have made some fairly intricate designs. One question I can answer is that most forms of digitizing software will use various common graphics files ... BMP, JPEG, PNG so you really don't have to worry about compatibility on that score. While Sophie Sew is free, I found it to be a little too basic. I am waiting for the version 2 to come out. I have an editor called My Editor (freeware -- http://www.wingsxp.com/index.php/my_editor/ ) an excellent program for editing. I am considering getting Embird after I try the free trial.

Heatherwallace, welcome to Designs by Sick forum. To download the free designs, all you need to do is click on your format (for Janome machines it is 'jef'), then save it where you want to access it in the future. It sounds like you were trying to open the file and adobe reader cannot open embroidery files. What you need to open embroidery files is something like Wilcom Truesizer, mentioned below or one of the others mentioned below. A couple are free and a few will cost you some money. If you need more help let us know.
