Default How to organize your embroidery files

here is an article on organizing your embroidery files that newbies and maybe some oldies may find of use

    http://www.secretsof.com/content/608

I would add that when you download a design to unzip it right then & there & delete any unwanted embroidery formats. If the file is unzipped, you can locate an embroidery design much easier. Ask me how I know. My resolution now is if I can't unzip it right after downloading it, not to download it at all.

I'm currently in the process of unzipping and deleting unwanted formats and I'm only to the F's. At the same time I'm deleting duplicate designs that I download and used different naming formats. Fortunately they are showing up now and I'm saving a lot of space by doing this.

Another good reason to unzip straight away - files are sometimes corrupt, and if the offer is time sensitive you could miss out on a design that you might really want.

I got caught up in downloading designs & it is a nightmare to go back & unzip & organize that which could have been done in seconds as I went along. That is always advice that I give new embroiderers. It's so much fun to find designs & collect them, but it makes it sooo much easier to organize & keep track as you go along.

Thanks for the advice Shastasmom! I've just been downloading things without doing anything else. The first ones I downloaded most likely don't even give me a clue as to what they are. I have started keeping track of where I get designs from, and most of mine are dl only in the pes that I need, but I would guess that some of them are taking up space that could be better used. Now if I can finish figuring out the program I have that will change the format and otherwise clean up the designs, I'll be all set.

Shastasmom, how safe is this link? (http://www.secretsof.com/content/608) Have you used it? I am hesitant to download files that are strange to me. I have downloaded things before that have gotten me into lots of trouble with the computer. It has cost me lots of money; money that could have been used for embroidery designs!!!

This site sounds too good to be true for organizing my files. Please let me know. Thanks.

    .

Overjoy25, Secrets of is a very safe site. They have lots of very nice designs and I never had any problems with that site and haven't heard of anyone having any problems. But if you're hesitant about downloading that file from there, they basically tell you how to do it on you're own.

Thanks for your reply. While I was looking to organize my files, I discovered a program?? that seems to have all sorts of files for organizing and I have started using it. I have also followed your advice and started to clean up my downloads by deleting the file extensions that I can't use. I have been downloading all sorts of freebies for about a year now and haven't done anything but put them in a file where I got them. I have lots and lots of catching up to do! Thanks again for your reply.

wp1012, just do it a little at a time. When I had to unzip all of my files, I did about an hour a day and finally got it done. Would have done more a day, but it would always put be to sleep. LOL.

    Shastasmom,

I finally had the nerve to download the file and figured out unzipping and put the folder in a place I will remember. Now to SLOWLY get busy and file all the downloads. Thanks.

Yeah, for you overjoy25. You'll get it done, just don't rush it and try and use the same naming method on all of the designs. You'll love it once you get it done.

Dawntatt, first off welcome to Designs By Sick forum. So nice to meet you. You will not regret putting your designs into folders. I put my designs in folders and try and unzip them right away. I also delete the formats I don't need. Also don't forget to back up your designs at least on a weekly basis. Enjoy your new machine and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
